mame language question....
#374567 - 03/11/18 02:05 AM

sorry to be such an idiot, but as you can tell from my previous post, i'm really tight on hard drive space right now. not that it will save me jack, but in the languages folder, would it be ok if I deleted every language other than English without it breaking anything? like i'd said before, it won't make much of a difference either way, i'm sure, but i'm pretty much near capacity until I can get a new machine that will accept a larger HD than what I have now. mame has been growing beyond belief so much lately, I don't want to get too much behind the curve. apparently, I already am pretty much. you all have been such a great help to me thus far, and I really do appreciate it more than you know. I just don't like touching things if i'm not sure that it'll screw anything up. not sure = don't touch to me. i'm sure that i'll have more idiot questions soon. thank you all once again for putting up with me, and for any input that you may have!

The size of these files is very small. If you are using MAME for console games, chances are that you are downloading games you will probably never play. You should be looking in the roms folder and deleting games you don't/won't play. Those will make the most impact in saving space, especially the CHD files. Also, check to see if you have multiple copies of games and keep just the version of the game you will play.

Don't be discouraged by some of the response you get. Some people forget that they were new at one point.

yes, I am serious, and I am just plain stupid. pretty sure that I made that clear in my post, but thanks for making sure to point that out. self esteem minus 100 HP. lol. remember, like i'd said, I have more dumb questions to ask. be waiting on the edge of your seat, as i'll do the same waiting on your respect filled replies. obviously, you know much more than I do, and I hope that helps your ego. no worries. love ya, tho!

thanks for an honest, actually respectful reply. I totally appreciate it. as i'd said in a previous post, I've been outta the game since 168. so much has grown and changed since then, the last thing that I want to do is screw something up. as i'm sure you know, even seemingly little insignificant things can cause a whirlwind of destruction. I just figured that it couldn't hurt anything to ask, even though it's something so small and as unimportant as this. I just didn't realize that i'd be torn a new mudhole for asking. thanks so much for your courtesy, and for an honest and respectful reply. I really do appreciate it. folks like you that do whatever you can to help are the reason that i'm here. I take no offense to the egomaniacs and braver-than-in-real-life keyboard cowboys. they've always existed, and always will. thanks yet again, and take care my friend!!!!

If you're running out of hard drive space, you should run a tool like SpaceMonger 1.40...

...to figure out which folders are taking up the most space. The results might be surprising.

You probably should run the Windows "Disk Cleanup" utility too, including the "Clean up system files" option.

wow! never heard of it before, but I just downloaded it. gonna give that sucker a whirl and hopefully see exactly how much space that I have that's being wasted. like you said, I have a feeling that i'm gonna be surprised. sounds just a TAD more productive overall than simply deleting language files from a mame folder. lol. thanks for the tip! i'm on it!

The entire language folder is under a 1MB - deleting it won't help you. Even including sources it's under 5MB.

yeah, that makes perfect sense. for some reason, when I last went through my stuff, it showed that the file size was ridiculously large. that's why I asked this question to begin with. I don't exactly know what I was ACTUALLY looking at the file size of, but this wasn't it for certain. I have, and will continue to, ask idiot stuff like this until I get my set updated without running out of HD space or breaking something. as far as saving HD space, i'd probably be better off simply deleting just a SINGLE picture off of my computer than giving a second thought to the language file. lol. sad, but it's a true story. thank you for your help! I truly appreciate it!
