Rampage Character Select

I'm trying to play Rampage on my NES Classic, but it will only let me pick the brown ape. If I have a second controller plugged it, THAT controller will be able to pick the green lizard man. But I can't find any way of selecting the white wolf man. I thought I could change some control settings, but it doesn't have that option in the mame menu. It's mame 2000, if that helps.

we do not support 18 year old versions of MAME.
