Odd Problem, If I save settings in MAME I can no longer play the game I save for
#373501 - 01/28/18 06:02 PM

Yeah, it's as odd as it sounds.

I'm running Mame flawlessly in Ubuntu 17.10 (RetroFE My frontend) but if I go to save settings for a machine, once I save it gives me the error that it's not finding any of the files it needs to start the game.

I've only tried with 3 games so far but each one is broken. The games are KoF2000, 2001, 2002. The only setting I am changing is the bios to us Japan MVS v3(I want Mai's bouncy back and Whip's gun). I've also tried all of the other BIOS even the default after saving the settings, can't open. If I delete the Config file for the individual machine it goes back to defaults and I'm able to play the game again.

I've scoured the internet trying to find something related to this and cannot find anything. I'm just trying to find a solution, I've got my cabinet halfway built and the computer works right now as is but I cannot change any of the bios information on any of the games and for a few games that is really important for me. (Mai just isn't the same without the bounce).

Here's what I've tried:

I deleted the NVRam Files for the roms. This just deleted my high scores and Bios settings. Didn't let me save.

Deleted the config files: Just to be able to play the games again.

Completely removed MAME and reinstalled. There was still some cached information but I'm not sure how to completely wipe mame cache without reinstalling Ubuntu all over again.

Tried running straight from MAME, Terminal, any other ways I probably tried, too.

I even tried switching the file names of the BIOS just so I could use the other bios as the default... but MAME uses CRCs to check it's files and not names so I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out which file was which...

PLEASE can someone help me out? I've been battling this for weeks and I can't find a way around it. I consider myself fairly computer savvy ( I do work in IT for god's sake) but I have no idea what else to do here.

If you need me to run logs just tell me where to get them (That would actually help me knowing where they are for MAME) and I'd be glad to grab them for you.

Edit:

It's an old Dell Optiplex 780 with an Intel Core2 Duo and an Nvidia GT730 ( I think) running Ubuntu 17.10 on a 2 128GB SSD on a RAID 0.

Mame Version 1.88 (Is there a better version? I ended up installing from the Ubuntu Store because it was more stable for me)

By not playing the game means I get this error:
262-p1-08-e0.p1 NOT FOUND (tried in kof2001 neogeo kof2001)

262-c8-08-e0.c8 NOT FOUND (tried in kof2001 neogeo kof2001)

I should also mention that I can play the BIOS version just fine if I open the options inside the game and play it that way. I can change anything I want from inside the game, I just cannot get my settings to save between sessions.

What version of MAME?

What kind of hardware? (probably not important, but can't hurt)

When you say "I can no longer play the game...", what does that mean? Do you get an error? If so, what is the error?

This.

You've not providing any error messages, you're not giving people anything to go on.

It could be as simple as you're changing it to a BIOS you don't have, but since you're providing no useful information it's impossible for anybody to help you.

MAME doesn't require a frontend to run. Running a NeoGeo game from within the internal MAME menu will prompt you to select which BIOS after selecting the game, again you're providing no real information about this case (which would rule out it being a frontend issue)

Sorry, I don't often post here. I've updated with more information.

Also, It plays fine if I start the game and go to the BIOS this way.

It's clearly lost your ROM path at some point then. You could probably manually edit the config file where it's stored but it shouldn't be doing that in the first place. (I know that's the mame.ini file on Windows, not sure about Linux these days) individual gamename.ini files will also override options contained in the default one.

As of this coming Wednesday 0.194 will be the current version, so you're about 6 months behind as there's a release every month.

It might be worth upgrading just to try, because there were some issues with MAME not saving settings properly, but that was to do with Video Options moreso than what you're reporting, which sounds a little odd.

It could be a frontend option if the frontend you're using is generating a fresh config file for each game with a blank rom path, overriding the global one, that would be my first suspicion.

What you're reporting isn't really normal behavior tho, and I would suspect it's something the frontend is doing incorrectly rather than MAME itself.

Well, I would believe you if I were using the front end to launch it but I'm not. I'm using solely MAME. I took the front end out of the equation long time ago.

I'll try and update and see if that helps. The Mame.Ini is still present in Linux and I have tried removing that to see if it builds a new one but I still have the same issue afterwards.

Thanks. If you happen to know where it stores the MAME path for saved games that could help.

well if the frontend has left ini files around for specific games with options missing etc. it could be that your MAME is still using them even if you're not using the frontend. I don't know how that FE works tho.
