MAME Randomly Resetting My Controls

I set up a bunch of custom controls that let me do everything with my controller, but sometimes I'll open up MAME and all my controls have been reset! It's as if the default.cfg file has been deleted. This has happened twice now and I'm getting tired of re-doing my control settings.
Linux Mint 18.3 / MAME v0.160 PC controller registers as Xbox 360 controller

The input code in MAME has changed significantly since 0.160, you're not going to get any support for that version, it's 3 years and over 30 versions out of date.
If anything it was a known issue back then, at least on Windows, but very possibly on Linux too.

Huh, that's the version that installed when I ran "sudo apt-get install mame". How do I get the latest version?

I don't know myself as I'm not a Linux user, but there are plenty of devs and users on Linux, so hopefully one of them will come along with an answer.
Sounds like the Mint packages are massively out of date tho.

Ok, I found out to get the latest version you have to manually enable the MAME repository, instructions here: http://sdlmame.wallyweek.org/repository/ For the sake of anyone else who finds this thread. :]
