Bullets in Asteroids, Star Castle not showing
#372597 - 12/31/17 08:38 PM

I know there have been some posts related to this issue, but I have tried numerous suggestions and cannot make bullets show up for these vector games on my 60" LED 1080p TV. They work fine on my laptop monitor.

Have adjusted various settings of contrast, brightness, vector beam settings, bloom...nothing seems to help.

I am running MAME on a QNAP server, and have confirmed that the vector.ini file is being recognized so that the changes I make are actually being utilized. Any other suggestions, or is this a hopeless cause?

I assume hlsl is being utilized...does being able to pull up the video menu with "~" confirm that? The way MAME is installed on the QNAP server, I do not have access to the MAME.exe folder and all the files in it, so I cannot confirm what is in there, though this is a 0.185 version that was made into an install package for QNAP, so it should be the same as that version on my PC. For the INI files I have gone to the Configure Options settings and set the INI directory to a shared folder on my QNAP, and confirmed that MAME recognizes and uses those INI's.

Very frustrating, because I love these old vector games. I have spent the past 24 hours searching for solutions and trying various recommendations.

If the laptop has the same screen resolution, the settings should be identical.

Ensure shadow mask alpha is 0. Monochrome games don’t have them. When HLSL is enabled, you can use ~ to tweak settings in game.

The laptop has different resolution. The TV is 1920x1080. In the MAME.ini file the screen resolution was set to "auto" . I tried setting it manually to 1920x1080 (this was in OSD per Window video options) and that did not help. Also tried your suggestions, but still no bullets. I have gone to the MAME site and set the INI files to the recommended parameters for vector graphics.

This seems to be a known issue that is not solved. I just did not expect it since it is fine on my laptop. Gamma settings have a big effect. Lowering the gamma you can begin to make things disappear, so I tried setting gamma to max, but that didn't help.

It's probably some kind of filter on your TV that's "smoothing" out the noise. Try putting the TV in "game mode" if you have it.
