Haze says we need to send chips from Virtua Fighter and Wing War to Caps0ff for decapping. We can get Virtua Fighter for $240. If you want to donate toward it you can click below and I'll get it when it reaches the goal. If the chips come from elsewhere in the meantime I'll start looking for a Wing War instead.

Thanks to our donators! Jeffrey Gray Darksoft haynor666 ElSemi
We got Virtua Fighter! I'll keep everyone updated on the progress. I'm not currently raising money for Wing War because I don't know of one for sale and finding an affordable Star Wars is humor.

If the set should happen to come with EPR-14869B on the (currently unemulated) I/O board, that needs a redump as well (by ordinary means). The bad bytes are few enough in number that they could be hand-patched by comparing them with other versions, but that's no substitute for a definitive dump.
Also of interest to me is the asynchronous serial protocol implemented by the 315-5338A custom I/O controller to transfer data between the I/O board and dual-port RAM on the main board. There is a serious lack of hardware documentation for both this device and its CRX/ST-V successor (315-5649).

I just read this shortly. I have a complete wing war board set. What would be needed?

I believe what is needed is for the board to be sent off to someone who will remove the chips, take the top off the chips and read out the program contained inside. Unless I am mistaken, its a destructive process with no way to restore the board to "working" state afterwards.

correct
in this case it's a mask part, with no known electronic readout, so it will be done with images of the die, and the 'typing monkeys' project.
but yes, once it's been decapped it's not really going to be usable anymore, and since they're not programmable parts you're not going to be able to repair a board with a replacement chip reprogrammed using the extracted data.
it essentially requires the sacrifice of a board.
I think the best anybody can hope for in terms of real hardware repairs is probably somebody using the extracted code to make some kind of fpga solution that works in the same way as the original chip but that's a task completely outside the scope of MAME.

If Virtua Fighter / Wing War chips are decapped, will this aid in Star Wars arcade MAME emulation, or will specific chips from Star Wars Arcade also have to be decapped?

Wing War should use the same chips as Star Wars Arcade

I have not gotten any response from possible donator parties of the boards/chips so I am moving forward with this. We are about $100 short for Virtua Fighter.
