Choosing a Linux distro is more troublesome than ever
#370101 - 10/04/17 09:08 AM

There's just too many of them! Many of them very good!

But not only are there hundreds of distros, with dozens of popular ones, but they each have multiple desktop environments to choose from.

Mint or Elementary? Cinnamon or KDE? Or none of the above?

And then what? I get used to one flavor on my desktop while a completely different one is more suited for me to play around with on my Raspberry Pi?

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!

Select any random distro, and you basically cannot go wrong, unless you have very specific requirements.

I'm running Raspbian x86 in some VMs and also on some "few year old" and some 8+ year old laptops. Anything that has "programming" as the first option in the start menu gets a big thumbs up from me.

The Raspberry Pi is a great little machine. I'm writing dashboard apps that hook up to various databases and display tons of information about how business is going (services delivered, cancelled, income, expenses, customer feedback, etc), and run these on Raspberry Pi's hooked up to big TVs.

On the desktop if you want any hope of Google returning usable support answers you'll run either Fedora (or Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS) or Ubuntu (or Kubuntu or Xubuntu). There are people having a great time with other distros, but they're also much more DIY affairs for the most part.

Similarly, if being compatible with what the rest of world is doing on the Pi is important at all to you, run Raspbian on it. Since Raspbian and Ubuntu are both Debian derivatives, learning one pretty much learns the other too.
