Sundance Question
#365927 - 05/11/17 11:53 AM

I'm trying to set up a working control panel for Sundance and one thing that seems to be missing is the two Nova buttons. I checked the driver source and I can't tell definitively whether they've even been set up. Is this a bug or is there something I'm missing?

Attached is my version of the Sundance file, which adds a mostly working control panel. The only two controls unaccounted for are mapped to the "Nova" buttons, but I can't get them to work. I did away with the overlay in favor of a color balance statement because I thought it looked better. If you're not satisfied, feel free to tweak.

Those are the 2 Nova buttons & they do work. You have to have a hatch open to fire or catch it. The only thing I've noticed is with multiple key presses, you can open hatches on the the other players grid. Don't know if you can do that in the original cabinet or not.

My only question is, what is the static like discharge across the screen when you hit multiple hatches at the same time?

I was wondering that myself. I figured it was a glitch in the original game design, preserved for posterity.

Hi, good job!

Can I add your 2 artwork (this and "tutankhm") to my "Alternate" collection? Thanks...

The fire buttons (P1 Button 1 default "CTRL "and P2 Button 1 default "A") are likely the NOVA buttons, just not labeled as such in the input menus.

Need to find someone with an original PCB to test & see. I wouldn't think that it would have passed out of Cinematronics doors like that.

If it doesn't, def needs to be looked at and/or fixed, & at least a bug report made.

Good luck finding 1 in the wild to test though...but if I have to, I'll keep looking!

I can do that. My buddy let me borrow the bezel for that scan you have.
If you would describe exactly what I should test and or provide a video I'll check it out on my next visit or Mike will shoot a little vid.

Borrowing that bezel was a true test of our friendship. So glad I got it back to him safe and sound.

For me, when I press the 4-5-6 (middle row) keys in too rapid of succession, this crazy "lightning" flashes across the screen.

Here's what is does when you use the 2nd players keypad to open a hatch on player1. To do this you have to hold down the 1st button & press another. It then draws the original P2 hatch gfx in a corresponding grid spot on the p1 grid. It doesn't actually open the hatch but it draws the original p2 hatch. Doing this will also randomly fire a Nova shot at times.

I'll bet his real pcb doesn't do this! At least both of these little things are easy for your buddy to check out...

Here's a quick snap of the "short". It semi-resembles a Tie hit in Star Wars.. I can't find anything in any instructions about it.
It's as if maybe, when hitting 2 buttons at the same time in the game, you're shorting it out, trying to open 2 hatches at the same time? And that maybe it's suppose to do that all the time when you attempt that.
OR it could be something they wanted to add in the original release but was scraped for some reason?

Just some random thoughts...Heck, maybe it's something super obvious that I'm missing too!

I've been playing around with the controls on this game. I am just trying to make it work with 2 keyboards. I found a way to eliminate the weird issues. It's not perfect since MAME does seem to have a limit on how many commands you can have per input. Basically, using the "not" command I have set it so the hatch will open if only one of the hatch buttons is pressed. If two are pressed, then nothing opens.

For every hatch pad, I have mapped one key from the numpad as well as seven other keys mapped as "not" commands. In order for this to work perfectly, MAME would need me to map eight "not" buttons. Worst case scenario, you have two buttons pressed and one of those hatches opens instead of no hatches.

The weird flash across the screen doesn't happen and, more importantly, no random hatches will appear on your opponents playfield.

Attached is my CFG file. I am using the default keyboard as well as "keyboard 4". If you want to try this, you'll have to figure out what number keyboard(s) MAME is seeing on your computer and make the appropriate changes. Replace "KEYCODE_4_" with "KEYCODE_2_" if your second keyboard shows up as Keyboard 2. Don't forget to enable multiple keyboards.
