What version ROMs to choose?

I apologize for the newbie question, but I'm finding that it's difficult to get a straight answer to this question. Probably because it's not as simple as a straight answer.
Anyway, if I install MAME 0.183 and currently have no ROMs, which version of ROMs should I try to get? Does it matter?

If you can, the latest set that ensures you will be able to launch all the games with the latest additions or modifications.
Anyway, with an older set surely a lot of games will work, but as I said, if you can, get always the latest romset.

Use the -listroms option
~ mame64 system_driver_name -lr
This tells you the roms required for specific system of the version you are using.
