I can't find a 5:4 monitor larger than 19". Is there a technical reason for this or do I just want something that nobody else wants?

Are you sure you don't mean a 4:3 monitor? 4:3 is the aspect ratio for CRT televisions and arcade monitors.
I have an old Westinghouse 20.1 1400 x 1050 4:3 LCD monitor... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KB95JG
It's the biggest 4:3 LCD I've seen. Sadly, it's starting to go south. Sometimes, when you turn it on, it only stays lit for a second and then goes black. It takes 4 or 5 tries before it will stay lit.
Even if it was working reliably, I wish the resolution was higher.

If you really want to keep it going, it probably just needs the caps done. I just did that for my old Samsung last year. 2 caps & works like it should! Cost me about $2.50 IIRC. Still looks better than some of the new ones I've gotten since(at least to me).
And yeah, it seems impossible to find a new monitor like that anymore. No one makes them. Everyone wants the widescreen(well, almost everyone). "Why would you want that?" Irritates me to no end. Because I do!

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

5:4 is a nice compromise if you intend to use it for both vertical and horizontal titles - it allows you to upscale a vertical image just a little bit more than 4:3 allows.

I think there used to exist 5:4 monitors in the 21" range, but its been years since I've seen one.
Edit - here's a pair for sale via Goodwill. Check those thrift stores!

I guess it would help if I would be clear when asking questions.....I'm looking for a larger LCD monitor. Sorry for the confusion.

Typically, ratio and size are related....

and native resolution. 17 tends to be 1024x768, 20 2048x1024, and so on.....
I recently found some brand new 19 PC CRTs that go up to 1600x1200. Too small, though, to pay at least $350 for. 19 is about 18 veiwable. LCDs are the same size as marked, though. Anyways, this might be informational.
