We dumped a boatload of Star Horse Progress boards which are apparently all needed to run the massive game:
Main Screens, ID# 837-14373-01 and 837-14374-01 ROM board ID# 840-0120B REV.B
Sound & Backup, ID# 837-14375-01, have 2 stacked ROM boards ROM board ID# 840-0121B REV.A
HORSE DATA ROM board ID# 840-0034B FLASH ROM board, used to store backup data, probably players saves, mostly empty
Live (game logic server), ID# 837-14376-01 ROM board ID# 840-0122B
The last board in this setup is Star Horse progress 03-12-01
Satellite, ID# 837-14377-01 ROM board ID# 840-0123B REV.A

Good job. I bet once it's eventually promoted to working status, it'll run at 1 FPS in Mame, right?
(The preceding is a serious statement, and not meant sarcastically).
Also, out of curiosity and since I don't know very much about this hardware, did it contain encryption and protection?

If there isn't another major breakthrough in CPU tech (haven't seen one in 10 years) then mame is probably only going to pass the 90s as a software holder. Maybe they will end up using our PC CPU for PC games.

I assume we'll also see this game in Demul, too?

hardware is common NAOMI, many units connected using ARCnet network. none of StarHorse game on NAOMI hardware uses encryption/etc, probably complexity of whole setup required to run the game was considered as "protection"
about playing teh game emulated - SMSC COM200 ARCnet chip emulation and networking have to be implemented, also a lot of power will be required, enough to run at least 4 or 5 NAOMI instances.

Does MAME have a SH4/Naomi front-end for the DRC? Is that something that is on the radar screen? (or would a SH4 front-end be wasted effort because of how much load the rest of the Naomi system requires?)

Definitely impressive that all the hardware for that was able to be found or acquired.
Looking at SEGA NAOMI SATELLITE TERMINAL HARDWARE page from System 16 web site shows that will be a chore linking up all the components in order to run an emulation of the game. Good luck to whoever takes up the challenge.
