Someone on the neo-geo.com forum has discovered a Dodonpachi III pcb. No word yet on if we will get a dump. According to a developer interview with Cave, it was an export/overseas version of DOJ that includes many of the updates that were later used in black label. It has been called (by Cave) a prototype for the black label version.

News: Cave PCB user from Youtube told me this.
DDP 3 is not a proto. It was sold to China.

This might be even more interesting actually..
One of my Chinese contacts says this is just a 'hack version from China' and that it could be found there.
Of course, I'm not ruling out it being original because in a market like that, where you have so many hacked versions of games it's easy to identify something as a hack when it is not, especially if it looks a bit 'cheap' in the way it was modified. Seeing the code if it gets dumped will be interesting, and we've seen weird Cave things before like the international version of Mushihime-Sama Futari Black Label.
The whole China situation is weird anyway tho, because you have hacks like that Kof 10th Anniversary game trying to pass itself off as an original game (even using some original art stolen from SNKs webpage at the time) and then the various Knights of Valour hacks (including the one with KOF characters) that are clearly built from (leaked?) sources, completely illegitimate, but not based on any known original revision.

It's not a hack. The head of Cave talked about it in an interview, there's nothing cheap about the changes, we know about the IGS/Cave relationship at the time, and the pcb itself even looks legit and has an IGS security sticker that wasn't present on the Cave DOJ boards. Nobody went into that level of bootlegging in 2002.

yeah, what I'm saying is I think it must have been misidentified as a hack by some people in China due to the sheer number of hacks that were on the market there (especially of IGS / SNK material, and shooters in general)
Anyway, looks like the gfx / sound roms etc. match the regular release at least (the checksums printed on the chips match) which is a relief, I wasn't sure where the III they used in the logo was coming from, but it must be based on characters already in the roms so if you do get a dump that's one less thing to worry about.
