Do inp files record the type of controls input?

I admit, it's a really obscure wondering, except insofar as I have two sticks on my panels to choose from, one digital, the other USB/analog. So coming into a game of Joust (yes.....the mighty Joust) at a decent pointage, and then only after playing some did I wonder what I'd used the time last.

No, they simply log the data going into the input ports. The type of controller you use when recording doesn't matter for playback.

Yeah, it wouldn't. But aren't the input ports specific? Digital, analog, trackball, etc?

MAME does record a few additional pieces of data for each analog input, but otherwise handles each port identically.
