Accessing Congifuration Menu outside Mame?

Hi - I've been using mame 0.90 for years with my kids. I've always been aware that the config menu key (tab) can be changed in the config menu itself, but I always avoided changing it. Unfortunately, I must have accidentally changed it recently without knowing what I changed it to. This means I can't access the config menu anymore - none of the key combinations I try bring it up.
Is there any way of peeking at the keyboard commands or changing them outside of mame? Failing this, what's the fix - is reinstalling the only option?

check the cfg directory and if you delete the right file it will restore what is defaulted.
In current MAME it's named default.cfg
