Gambling input terminology
#356186 - 07/03/16 06:12 PM

There are many gambling games in MAME, which has special inputs for them sorted by function. However, there doesn't seem to be any easily available online reference for all of these terms, especially those inputs which seem to be for operator use only. I would like to know what these input names mean in their widest scope of usage.

  • High
  • Low
  • Half Gamble
  • Deal
  • Double Up
  • Take
  • Stand
  • Bet
  • Key In
  • Key Out
  • Payout
  • Door
  • Service
  • Book-Keeping

> Door

Gambling machines, like pinball machines, have a door. That door has a switch on it. Among other things, the game typically uses it to indicate when to disable high-voltage electromechanical parts so that people don't get fried.

In addition, many have additional locks and doors etc. to stop people accessing the insides and potentially stealing cash etc. as these things tend to be much more strictly regulated than other arcade games.

And all protocols used in gambling games need to trigger an event if one door is openned.

> High
> Low

When you enter the Double-Up feature (if exist), you'll need to chose a number o a card from high/low. if you win, your earnings from this hand/game will be duplicated.

> Half Gamble

When you enter the Double-Up feature (if exist), this input will allow you to gamble just the half of the amount you have to gamble.

> Deal

Self explanatory. Is the "start" for slots, or just deal/draw for cards games like pokers...

> Double Up
> Take

If you win a hand and the game has double-up feature, will ask you if you want to gamble the last earnings. You can choose either "double-up", or "take", to gamble or just to take out your earnings and continue the regular game.

> Stand

For Black Jack games (also 21 and 7 mezzo games). You can ask for cards. "Hit" or "Deal" to ask for a new card, "Stand" to stop here and allow the dealer to play himself.

> Bet

Self explanatory... Set the amount of credits to play.

> Key In
> Key Out

Some games have an operator, attendant, or just a "different" I/O for money. Key In is to add credits, Key Out is to grab them.

> Payout

Cash Out. Transform the current credits amount into tokens, coins, tickets, or whatever the game could give

> Door

Already discused...

> Service
> Book-Keeping

These two are meant for operators, attendant and internal people. They could allow some settings, bookkeeping, show statistics, test inputs/RAM/video/etc, payrates, etc...

Robbie.

Thanks for providing this thorough explanation.

I also chanced to come across a vendor page that defines some of the operator-relevant terms.

May also be Red and Black instead, depending on the game (most Aristocrat 3-line games have dedicated Red and Black buttons since these buttons are normally used for the first and fifth bet/play line button on games with 5 or more lines). Or, with the other rare type of gamble game, dedicated x2 and x100 buttons (with x3, x5 and x10 being shared with the 3 play line buttons) - Super Bucks III (and IV, V etc.) would be the most common game to have the 100-to-1 gamble. I have also seen dedicated Heart, Diamond, Club and Spade buttons on machines which didn't share those with bet multipliers (mostly high denomination games) - these are for the suit gamble (e.g. bet on the card suit instead of red and black to win x4).

For most of the games I've seen, half gamble is a toggled on and off by pressing the regular gamble button inside the double up screen (e.g. Wild One, being that it's the only working Aristocrat game in MAME with a half gamble). Unless someone can point to me a game with dedicated Gamble and Half Gamble buttons.

Also "Spin" for some slot games.

Also "Gamble" for some slot games (notably those which aren't limited to double or nothing in the "double up" game, e.g. suit gamble, Konami's dice gamble and the aforementioned Super Bucks odds-based gamble). I believe I have also seen "W-Up" listed in a few games in MAME, literally "double you up". "Take Win" is of course the same as Take - some games also combine Take Win with Start Feature (or sometimes Spin/Start Feature), the latter being used to begin the free games or other bonus feature if the machine doesn't start it automatically.

Also called "Collect" in Australian games.

Also missing is "Reserve", which basically does nothing but show a "Reserved" message on the screen (anything from plain text e.g. Aristocrat MK4 up to a large full screen RESERVED sign, which usually turns itself off after 3 minutes if the button isn't pressed again). Most gambling venues in Australia also have their own plastic reserve signs to put over the machine's screen, and you need permission from gaming staff to remove one if a machine has been abandoned (e.g. left untouched for over ten minutes or the player has left the venue and not returned). The Reserve button is usually found on pub/hotel type machines in place of Service, which is usually only found on casino-based machines.
