The Joy of Tempest
#355659 - 06/14/16 02:55 AM

I'm loving the stock HLSL settings, and more importantly the controls response.

Yeah, Jezze did a lot of excellent updates regarding vector fx in HLSL and the vector renderer in general.

I guess your video shows the new improvements for the vector length attenuation.

As a tip for anyone who plays Tempest on a horizontal monitor, i suggest to increase the RGB Gamma (not the Gamma setting under Brightness and Contrast).

That way you can make the vector lines thinner and bringing out the points even more. The overall picture will get a little darker, which you can compensate with Brightness, Contrast, Gamma settings.

Gamma didn't used to have an effect on vector games. Now it does. I messed around with what you suggested. It does provide a sort of scanlined effect, which is more accurate in that way, but reduces the candy-like translucency, which I think is a more important display element.

For those who want to try this out, the parametre I think is in vector-mono, though I would guess this affects all vectors games.

No, the vector-mono.ini is for B/W or monochromatic vector games, because these games dont use a shadowmask. Vector games with color use a shadowmask, for example Tempest, Starwars etc.

I sadly forget to tell you, that the "RGB Gamma" in the slider-menue gui, is named "power" in .ini file.
So you dont use this:

Code:

#
# CORE SCREEN OPTIONS
#
brightness 1.0
contrast 1.0
gamma 1.0

You need to use this:

Code:

power 1.0,1.0,1.0

The higher these values, the thinner the lines, brighter the points and darker the screen gets.
Be careful with changes in the # CORE SCREEN OPTIONS, as they are saved in the .cfg file on exit of the game and they will override your # CORE SCREEN OPTIONS setting of your .ini file, upon next start of the game.
Be sure to delete your .cfg file, each time you change any # CORE SCREEN OPTIONS of your .ini file (especially if you do it with sliders), if you want a correct result.

I tried this and found no effect. I dunno. I like how it looks as-is, though I need to try some of your all's vector inis....
