MAME 0.174 'Configure Machine' causes hang on Windows 10

Hi all,
I'm relatively new to MAME, but am loving it. However, I'm getting a really weird problem with it.
Running the latest version of vanilla MAME (0.174) on Windows 10 with a quad-core i5, 8GB RAM...
Fresh install, put ROMs in folder. They're all there and working. On first boot I can select 'Configure Machine' in the UI and it works fine. Quit out and back in, though, and pressing that option causes the programme to crash and quit.
I've tried everything I can think of to sort this out, no luck. As I say, fresh install works fine.
Any pointers for me?

I tried both latest GIT and the 0.174 released version, but I haven't experienced this issue (I have windows 10 too).
Can you provide a step-by-step to reproduce this?

Install/extract MAME 0.174.
Put ROMs in folder.
Boot MAME.
Select ROM, edit config, save, play ROM, exit. Rinse and repeat. Working fine.
Exit MAME.
Reload MAME - now 'COnfigure machine' crashes the program to desktop after a freeze.
It's so frustrating!

What machine is MAME selecting when you hit the "Configure Machine" option? I've tried various different machines but I cannot get a crash
