unable to properly configure mame to play console games

Hello all,
Sorry in advance for the questions I'm about to ask, but I'm rather new and it seems there is a lot of thing I do not understand.
I know that MAME and MESS did merge, a few release ago. I am rather familiar with older mame 'arcade only' releases.
In order to get familiar with the MESS feature (now in mame), I just wanted to use mame to launch an Atari 2600 rom. And I am UNABLE to do so...
When I open MAMEUI 0.174, I am unable to list a2600 games. Is there anything to enable?
Does it have something to do with "software file base" or "software list base" ?
When I open MESSUI, it lists a computer and consoles. When I open MAME 0.174, I assumed it would be the same, but I only see arcade related entries.
 I am getting mad !

I personally found this totally non-intuitive as well.
Bottom line, just grab the software-list ROMS from Pleasuredome, and it sorts itself out.
At the risk of annoying Mame devs, I think the usability of the internal UI is...... off. But since they're not making a commercial product, I imagine it's waaaaaaaaaaaay down their list of things to do. If it's on it at all.

Maybe John IV could add the features at messui to mameui in a near future, since messui is discontinued, to display computer and console game list properly in the ui..

MAMEUI is purely Robbbert's baby now. John IV makes IV/Play now for his specific needs.

It's quite intuitive if you aren't using MAMEUI. It does become complex if you are.

We brought in a dedicated dev for the internal UI (the MEWUI author). His full-time job is making users happy. If you have issues with the internal UI (not MAMEUI), please start filing bugs and feature requests.
