Any of you ever play the original battle zone

Any of you ever play the original arcade machine battle zone. I never have but I was really excited to play it on mame. I even got a Logitech flight stick so it feels like the arcade. In the original arcade machine what directions could you move? When I play it on mame I move the stick up or down to go right or left that's it.

Yes. Spent many a quarter on that game in my youth.

You will need to get two joysticks if you want to it to feel like the original.

You can move left, right, forward, and backward. Press the Tab key to access the internal UI then select Input (this machine) to see/remap the controls.

You can't play Battlezone correctly with only one controller. For example, I use an Xbox 360 controller - the left stick controls the left track on the tank, and the right stick controls the right track. Sounds like you have one stick only, so you can only work the left track.
As already noted - you can use the TAB key and change the controls. Better yet, get a second controller first.
Having said all that, despite an abiding love for the game, I'm soooooo bad at it. Just pathetic.

As others have said short of a dedicated controller your best bet is one of the modern console type controllers like an XBOX 360 or XBone, map Battlezone's two sticks to the two mini-joysticks.
Battlezone also had the fire button on the top of the right stick. So map that to one of the bumper buttons or right trigger perhaps.
A long time ago Mame had built in hacks to allow it to be played w/ regular arrow directional controls but it was eventually removed.

Map the controls this way to make it work with one joystick:
P1 Right/Up..........Up or Left
P1 Right/Down........Down or Right
P1 Left/Up...........Up or Right
P1 Left/Down.........Down or Left
For the "or" entry to work, map each input, one input direction at a time.
In other words:
-Launch Battlezone.
-Press the 'Tab' key.
-Use the Arrow keys and scroll down to "Input (This Machine)" and press the 'Enter' key.
-Scroll down to "P1 Right/Up" and press the 'Enter' key. Press up on your joystick and wait a few seconds.
-After the input registers, press the 'Enter' key again and press left on your joystick and wait a few seconds.
Now you should see the input "P1 Right/Up" listing something to the effect of "Joy Up or Joy Left".
Scroll down to the remaining three P1 directional inputs and follow the same pattern substituting joystick input accordingly.
After the above mappings are configured, the tank will control this way:
Forward = Joy Up
Reverse = Joy Down
Right = Joy Right
Left = Joy Left
Further, the above with something like the HodRodSE or X-Arcade (Or just keyboard usage), you would want the mappings to appear as shown below, if you only wanted to use one joystick instead of both controllers:

The potential drawback to this is only full speed will be available. I always use both sticks, as will be available in the mappings below, but some might miss the dual speed.

One of the items I miss from older era of MAME.
*wishful thinking here after seeing lua scripting at work*
Seeing how Carl was able to work with lua scripting to do specific features for chess where the layout file is utilized, I wonder if something can be done for users that prefer input hack options for specific games.
It would be great if a layout file that uses specific lua scripting method can temporarily over-ride the default inputs and allow the input hacks to temporarily take over input options while a specific game such as Battle Zone is being played. Once game play is concluded, the input hack controls could then be returned back to standard default inputs.
It would have to involve resetting MAME unless the input hack can be cleared from memory once game play is concluded and user selects a different game. I would like to believe it is possible, but maybe not possible.
