I've been searching for an old game and am hoping someone here might know the title.

I'll have to describe the game, but maybe someone knows the name of it. I've been searching for this game for upwards of 15-20 years.
Game is from the late 80's early 90's. Arcade console. The game was one where you picked from a number of initial characters. I believe one was a zulu warrior type, and threw spears. The goal was to fight off enemies while trying to reach a blue (I think) warp gate to the next level. Along the way, you could pick up and switch between additional characters. They ranged from different times in history, including the "future". You could pick up a rocket throwing character, some with guns etc.
Any ideas?

Gain Ground
It's kinda working in MAME at the moment, but the dipswitch reading is broken due to a timing issue, so it's stuck in free play.
In this case there are older versions where the coinage settings worked 'better' (albeit with a hack) although I hate to recommend those because the overall emulation wasn't as good.
I've actually just checked in a workaround for the Free Play issue since we've been unable to solve it properly, there's no way anybody sane would want to be running a version of MAME that's 7 or 8 years old, so having a kludge to make it work as well as it did then is better than having to recommend such awful, awful old versions of MAME.
