This is how Firefox is displaying the author icons in MAME git page.
It shows OK Internet Explorer 11 (no oversized icons).
I cleared FireFox cache and temp files already.

Which page exactly? What's the URL?
All I can say so far is - can't duplicate on Firefox, must be at your end.

the log page:
http://git.redump.net/mame/log/
and when I click on any log to see details, I get this (see attached pic)...
It works fine with IE 11.
I haven't updated FireFox yet... still using v42.0
I'll try the link with FireFox on my laptop (I'm currently using a desktop)

Well first off, that's duke's mirror. Official git is *technically* at github.com.
For a similar page at github.com, you want: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commits/master
Either way, no problems of viewing git.redump.net log page or commit details on Firefox 46.0b2 (I live on the edge) on Windows 10.

The big avatar problem can be solved by refreshing the page completely (ctrl + F5).

FYI:
Chrome also does this from time to time & is also solved with Shift-F5 to do a full refresh.
Don't ask why, just hit F5...
