MAME parent/clone region designation
#351708 - 03/19/16 03:06 AM

Hello,

Just out of curiosity, how do the parent sets and clones, with regions, get designated? With some sets, the Euro version is the parent set and other regions are clones while with some, the US set is the parent and the other regions are clones.

Just wondering.

Thank you,
Jason

The top position is given world/euro if we have it, then to anything else in English if we don't then others. The newest revision is also given parent status, so if there were 2 world dumps... This system has caused some gripes but at this point I think mame is maybe too big for anyone to change it.

there are also exceptions

for example, we prefer versions that show the original developer over licensed versions (which is why Puckman is the parent over Pacman)

also if a game has been ridiculously bastardized for a non-Japanese market we tend to prefer the version with the game most intact as the parent as it best represents the game in question.

ultimately it's up to whoever developed the driver tho.

This is a nice info thread, this forum is set to not expire threads anymore so it should come up in searches.

Too bad that with JP games the US/EU/World is often the dumbed-down version to avoid.
A region filter or whatever option to change the priority order would be awesome, but maybe that's not doable...
(you were probably asked that Q many times but heh)

See http://docs.mamedev.org/basicuse/commonissues.html for details.

Thanks for asking this question, I'm trying to catch the most common questions and get them on the record to save people time.

Given how racist people tend to get on forums like this about the mere presence of mahjong and hanafuda games in MAME I don't want to live in a world where those same people are confronted with on-screen written Japanese in games they thought they knew. The "English = parent set" rule is for our collective sanity.
