My friend sent me a .rec file from MAME, how do I play it back?

I'm familiar with inp files and saw an option for mng and of course avi... But I can't find anything about how to play a rec file. It is supposed to be his playthrough of a game we are playing together, but I can't figure out how to get it to load?
Any ideas?

Thanks. But I talked to him and he said it is actually an inp file that he named incorrectly. His MAME was .152 and mine is .148, but I couldn't get the inp to play. I guess you have to be using the same version?

Try to rename (actually to change the extension) the file from [FILE NAME].rec to [FILE NAME].inp
