Unless you were actually serious; That would be funny.

Some of us grew up hearing Popcorn everywhere.

(Note to those who don't sit through the who video: After the game version, it plays covers over game footage.)

"Sampled" means they actually were digitally playing back a recording of the original band ("Hot Butter", I guess?). Machines at that time were not capable of doing so; the version of Popcorn in some Pengo ROM sets was a chiptune arranged by the game's designers.

But yes, ripping off popular music was somewhat common in early arcades (and especially in early home computer games). Bomb Jack has the Beatles' "Lady Madonna", for instance.

And Super Locomotive's theme is Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Rydeen."

Hah, it kind of does, although I doubt that one was intentional. The more well known one from Donkey Kong is the Dragnet theme which plays over the opening.

Beatles covers are surprisingly common in that era. Mike uses an uptempo version of A Hard Days Night. I'm surprised they got away with it, considering how big the Beatles are.

One of my favorites is Zoo Keeper.... new [Re: DMala]

The attract tune is that minor key sort of mischief kind of feel thing. Very similar to The Little Nash Rambler tune that was on the Monster Mash album. Then there's the jazz tune during the score table. Groovy.

Never liked the Hot Butter Pengo tune, which is why I have only set 2 on my machines.
