IIRC, quite a few people round here have suffered because of PayPal's mistakes, incompetence, gross misconduct sometime around the stipulated timescales.

Guru ???

Not sure these class action lawsuits are worthwhile .... If all you get is a few $$ at the end, it's just not worth the hassle.

That's for sure. I've been "in" two class actions, one against Hugesnet for the rip off they were (are?), and Netflix for I never understood what. To be "in" involved mailing back a postcard to be included.

Hugesnet gave me a voucher which I could use toward... their own shitty service I cancelled years earlier because it sucked. Why would I go back to it to cash in the voucher? What a shitty settlement.

Netflix I actually got a check for a buck and some change. Less than $2.

The lawyers I'm sure made millions off the settlement. Who got justice? The victims?

If you opt into a class-action, its not because you hope to get whats due to you, because nothing the victims get comes even close to whats due. You would opt in because you hate the company enough to want to see them take the hit.

yeah, I've noticed that a lot with these 'settlements'.. often they're free stuff on a service you have to subscribe to / a free subscription... the very same kind of service they give away free stuff to get you to subscribe to because there is more value in having you as a subscriber so they can spam you with advertising etc. and lock you in further to buy more stuff which you need to maintain your subscription to keep.

whoever decides such things to be a suitable punishment really needs to look at the bigger picture, half of them are more like rewards for the company than anything else.

Funny thing, class actions... We were included in a settlement on our 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It seems they didn't include enough protection on the rear end of the vehicle and if it got hit just right, you burst into flames and died (which several people did). Rather than recall a million Jeeps to rebuild them or pay to replace them altogether, the settlement stipulated that anyone in the settlement could receive a "free trailer hitch" that would stop anyone from hitting the gas tank. So we took it to the shop to cash in on the settlement, only to be told, "You have rust where the bolts would go, so this is null and void." A 15-year-old vehicle has rust underneath. Imagine that. I'm betting every single Jeep from that year under the class action had this rust. Needless to say, we won't be buying another Jeep or Chrysler.

Oh come on, Guru was clearly in violation of their terms of service. He also sent them falsified documents when they cracked down on him. He loves to cry poor, but PayPal were actually within their rights to lock his account.

I seem to recall some stories about porn websites having their accounts frozen and money confiscated because PayPal is run by Puritans and they disapprove of that sort of thing.

i've owned them $900 for 5 years now new [Re: krick]
#349716 - 01/30/16 12:17 AM

some buyer did a chargeback for a camera i sold him in early 2011.

he used his real name on the paypal account, ebay account, positive feedback messages, confirmation emails that he'd received the camera, and all other correspondence. same name as his bank account on the paypal account as well. 2 months later, he charged the amount back saying his card was used unauthorized.

i submitted the most damning pile of evidence against the chargeback to paypal per their request so they could litigate for me. a week later, they messaged me and said there was nothing they could do since his creditor sided with him.

fuck paypal.

i learned everything i know from KC

I usually opt in. My favorite one was the credit card foreign transaction fee settlement. I was living in England and getting paid in America for 2.5 years of the time period the class action suit covered. I ended up using a US card a lot while there since it was easiest, knowing all about foreign transaction fees. Sometime after moving back to the USSA, I received the class action info in the mail. I submitted some info, then received 3 different checks over a couple of years, somewhere in the range of $800-$900 total. All because some dimwit(s) couldn't read their credit card terms.

Note: Capital One has no foreign transaction fees on their credit cards or ATM cards. That's what's in my wallet on trips a broad.

I used to have Capital One for 2 or 3 years (a good number of years ago)... Then I got tired of paying that $3.00 a month membership fee, or whatever it was.

The people behind the Neo900 mobile device have had a massive pile of funds frozen by the scumbags at PayPal which means they cant actually buy parts for these devices.

I for one refuse to use PayPal for anything just because of the crap like this that they pull.

Not quite. There's more to it than that, but basically PayPal doesn't want to be used for any adult-related transactions because payment processors have to have a specific level of regulations and security.

PayPal does not meet those requirements, and doesn't want to do so, so instead they just issued a blanket ban on everything.

Not to mention, their services being used for adult stuff means the government will take a better look at what they do... and they really don't want to be monitored by anyone.

I don't pay fees for checking or credit cards. In fact, I only use checking accounts that pay other bank's atm fees for me.

Well, I guess I did pay like $0.30 in foreign transaction fees when I used the wrong card once last tear. That was 1/10 of what I got back from one class action settlement.

I recall being eligible for an ATI deal back in thousand-six.....I got....thirty bucks, maybe?

In entirety: this is what you get with Capitalism.

On the upside, I recently bought a foam mattress from Wally world, and ended up not liking it, so I went online and checked the FAQ on returns, and then wasn't sure about a detail and online'd CS, and they just wrote it off. Gave me a refund right there, and said do whatever you want with it. (I use a mattress protector in general, especially in this case so's I can return it....mmm-mm-mmm...) Who's gonna pay for that? I dunno, but I didn't even hafta leave tha howse!
