I didn't want to hijack Tiggerfin's topic so here's this...
Speaking of Humble Bundle.....
I got several games a few days ago. But, IMO, one worth mentioning is...
Volgarr the Viking
Hard game!... A bit like 'Shadow Dancer' hard (if you play by not using shurikens). But, just like SD (even on the hardest difficulty), it seems like once you figure out the enemy patterns, it's a matter of memorization and timing. Or, maybe just lots and lots of practice. 
The character reminds me of the one from Magic Sword. It has an upgrade system liken to Ghouls n' Ghosts, and the first stage (or, at least a small area) is a nod to an old, but classic game.

That's the game I was referring to when I said it was giving a nod... Well, the first thing you come upon is a block in the ground with 2 (flying things) guarding an item... Then, ahead of that, is a rope to climb with what must be "Rastan's" body. 
But if you want to talk about games that are similar....
Insanity's Blade and Odallus: The Dark Call
Odallus came after Insanity... For both games: The First stage is a Town on Fire, there's a level with snow and shifting winds... The level maps have branching and or alternate paths... Oh yeah, and an opening cinematic.
Odallus seems to be the harder of the 2 games (boss wise). I'm stuck at a 3 headed flying monster.
