A "moral" way to download Arcade ROMs
#349095 - 01/09/16 02:40 PM

In a way, this is a continuation of my "Dumping Tekken Tag Tournament" thread from a while ago.

I've been really good the past few months about not illegally downloading, especially those nasty torrents. That includes ROMs. I was able to not only buy the Retrode and all its adapters so I can legally dump almost all my cartridge games, but I also was able to dump my PS2 BIOS so I can legally use PCSX2.

However, now I really wanna make Super Street Fighter II Turbo my Favorite Game. Also, I wanna be able to play it online on a regular basis. Everyone knows that Capcom never put out an acceptable home version of SSF2T. Not only that, no one plays HD Remix online anymore, and that's the only home version that has online play.

This is what I had in mind, so I have easier access to my Favorite Games but don't have my conscience chewed on in the process:
-I can only download ROMs, ISOs, and/or BIOSes, for any games and/or systems I legally own in one form or another.
-If I cannot legally obtain a certain game and/or system, then I can only download it if it's 15 years old or older.
I adopted these rules from my friends at Abandonia (www.abandonia.com).

Do you think that these rules are reasonable? I just wanna be at peace with my mind about this!...

No, I think you're being very unreasonable. To my knowledge, almost none (if not absolutely none) of the games in MAME are currently being sold by the original manufacturers, so you're denying a profit to literally nobody by downloading them.

Basically, get over yourself. There are Jewish people who use MAME who don't have the level of self-guilt that you have.

..life's too short.

And another thing, I'm willing to bet just about everyone involved in coding the original games has a large MAME collection on their own personal computers.

Nobody cares if you download the full MAME set, no one.

Fine then. If I'm free to download any and as many ROMs as I please, then I will.

Thanks!

My view on it is this... There's nothing stopping companies from offering these games, or ROMs, (or whatever term you want to use) for purchase. So, until that day comes, go ahead and download whichever game you want. Although, I wouldn't go all out and get every freaking, single game there is. To me, that's just wasteful. The moment they do make them available, sure, go ahead and purchase them.

Off-Topic. Recently, some NeoGeo &/or SNK games were made available. There's a few Samurai Shodown games I like... But they have yet to receive a dime from me.

Oh well.

To be perfectly honest, it's better for the project if you download the full set rather than picking and choosing. By having many redundant backups of the full set, it makes it exponentially less likely that any particular ROM set will ever be permanently lost.

And in case you think I'm being facetious, ask some of the long-time people about "raflsiau", an unencrypted version of Rafflesia that ended up being lost when the one person who had it suffered a hard drive crash.

From a realistic standpoint, MAME is both a give-and-take when it comes to arcade companies. Arcade companies are typically awful at archiving the source code and binaries to older games - in many cases, when these companies have gone back to do a retro re-release now that there's a market for such a thing, MAME has been the only thing preserving old copies of these companies' games. There's even been a couple instances of arcade companies actively using the MAME source - technically in contravention to the MAME license - in retro re-release packs, so there really isn't a moral leg to stand on at the end of the day. Just download the whole set and enjoy yourself.

They did (3DO version). And if you want a more decent 1P game I suggest you look for the IIX Japan version.
