The End Of An Era

From latest commit on http://git.redump.net
ärˈkān/Submit adjective understood by few; mysterious or secret. "modern math and its arcane notation" MAME is our trademark, the acronym is not important but we should not describe it as an arcade emu.
-#define FULLLONGNAME "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator" +#define FULLLONGNAME "Multiple Arcane Machine Emulator"
Mame is now an arcane emulator !!!

arcane ? ![](//www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif)
I would go with Multiple Arcade and Machines Emulator. If MAME really changes to arcadNe, I'll remove the full description from my frontend and call the emulator simply by MAME.

The name that truly applies is MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), however MAME has way more "brand-recognition".

Interesting. I think Archaic offers a more apt adjective than a word meaning "mysterious" and has the added benefit of asserting MAME's focus on preserving older systems), but at least it's more fitting than "Arcade".

I almost read that as Must Achieve Maximum Ejaculation... thank God. It'd prolly imply a ton more Adult Slot games then.

My vote goes for "Multiple Akashic Machine Emulator" since it refers to "an ethereal compendium of all knowledge and history."

Like DVD originally was Digital Video Disc, then Digital Versatile Disc. Then they said it's just DVD. doesn't stand for anything.

I think Multiple Accurate Machine Emulator would be a nice fit. * Everyone understands what it means. * It has always been true. * It describes what separates MAME from many other emulators. * We can refer people to it who think MAME should be something it's not...

Actually, it stood for "broadcast standard used by all TV stations around the world until the late 1990s". VHS won the *consumer* market; that wasn't the *only* market.

That's BetaCAM, which isn't the same thing as BETAMAX at all. The tape transport is similar, but that's it. BetaCAM uses different heads, different modulation, different bandwidths and different tape using different emulsion in different cassettes. BetaCAM is frequency-multiplexed component video. It isn't even close to the luma/chroma scheme used in BETAMAX and VHS. The meme that BETAMAX was successful in the professional domain needs to die.

I'm partial to Maximum Accuracy, or Mostly Accurate (in case developers are humbler), Machine Emulator: good for all systems, as appropriate after the MESS merge, and underlining MAME's peculiarity of avoiding hacks if possible.
"Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator" underlined the old peculiarity of consolidating multiple machines into an emulator, which isn't an advanced feature any more now that many popular, newer emulators (e.g. Demul, Higan, Mednafen, Raine) have followed the example set by early MAME and support different machines in an unified architecture.

let's just call it MAME and be done with it... and no more M.A.M.E.. My frontend Emu Loader will be updated to use MAME as the emulator's name (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator is gone for good.
