Current Neo-Geo humble bundle offer
#347980 - 12/11/15 09:15 AM

Hello, I don't know if I'm breaching any rules here but the humble bundle website is currently running an excellent offer for some of the Neo-Geo's greatest hits.

AFAIK it's the first time PC/Mac users can purchase these games legally. I'm currently on the shittiest possible internet connection so I didn't have a chance to download them yet but I understand they can be downloaded as clean ROMs (in addition to an in-browser emulator). No idea what technology it runs on - recentish MAME ? Hacked NeorageX ?

I remember the initial amazement of the Neo-Geo in 90's game magazines, and I have another kind of nostalgia for the early drama and excitement when that luxury system started getting emulated (geoshock anyone ?) - Happy to finally own the games !

SNK released a game on the PSP and PS2 called SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 which I purchased hoping more volumes would follow suit.

Sadly it never happened

At least there's a lot of options on the PSN for purchasing classics as well.

This is, how do I put it, a sore subject around here.

IF you buy this bundle, make sure to give 100% to charity. I'll just say that.

Also, once you've bought it and legally have the rights to the ROMs, play them in MAME; the included emulator is basically a broken version of Nebula.

depends on what was used. usually, uniextract will do the trick. Although it hasn't been updated in ages. It might have problems extracting stuff packed with the latest WinRAR and such...

http://legroom.net/software/uniextract
Edit: newer unofficial build here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171930-new-unofficial-version-165/

Edit2: Looks like the status of uniextract is a complete mess. This may be newer: https://yadi.sk/d/YUsn1gzJhScDj

Like Solstar said, the PSP had a Volume 0 in Japan. The PS2 version of the set was also kiiiiiiinda bad, I mean it had some good games but the emulation was pretty hacky, with some sound effects and voices fully removed for no reason. Shock Troopers was also modified a bit. There were some speed issues too.

The extras were awesome, though. Music and concept art galore.

Terminal Reality sucked at emulating games but they were pretty damn good at creating extras.

Understood - that's what I did (I'm an aid worker working for Oxfam in South Sudan atm so it's like I'm paying myself!). The idea was to get a licence to the ROMs, not whatever software they run them on. Shame SNK won't get any money but at least they will see the appeal their old games still have!

A shame that the company who developed the original games is choosing to work with dubious coders instead of going to the reference (MAME obviously). I'm sure the team would find a way to overcome the source licence issues if the game makers themselves asked. That would be a great story of cooperation in this long-running cold war with the emulation world.

(I haven't visited the Loony Bin in years so I hadn't seen that discussion happening over there. Additionally I didn't know posts in this forum went up on the frontpage as-is. Sorry!)

7-Zip doesn't have any issue unzipping the apk. Beside it a different zip file. Linux apk (zip).

I'm still learning new things on the Android. Like push, pull and other adb commands.

Can even backup the whole phone by using this command "adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab" and also restore your stuff on the phone by using this command "adb restore C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab" (Note: Doesn't work on some Android devises.)

That is not directly possible since MAME asks for all versions of the neogeo bios and the package here includes only one.

You an quite happily launch MAME from the commandline with only the bios file you're using present.

Those are all included, at least in the two games I installed (AOF 2 and Garou.)

If you paid $10, Go back to your download page and you'll see a few more games to download.

It's if you paid over the average. Not $10.
