Its all relative.
Given the age of the games, some of the stuff from the 1970's and 80's use more CPU power than the stuff from the late 90's and early 2000's.

NFL Blitz and Gradius 4 use a lot of CPU, if memory serves...

And they are also not remotely the most demanding games in MAME. That cup would probably go to 39in1, one of the Naomi-based titles, or more realistically, outrun2.

Time to bring back this old thread once more and say give Outrun2 a test and watch the attract loop mode. It is supposedly more watchable, but will run extremely slow as Haze's comments indicate.

OutRun2 (Chihiro) current status 17/01/17
Published on Jan 17, 2017
NOT my work in progress (this is all Samuele Zannoli) Note, runs at about 5% speed, this was recorded over a 6 hour period with -aviwrite to show what it would look like if running at full speed (which is currently impossible in MAME)
There are no coin inputs / other controls or sound at this stage. --

[MAME] Outrun 2 WIP (12/05/15) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6u0nI1LDIc
Published on May 12, 2015
This is a WIP video showing progress with OutRun 2 emulation as of May 2015.
It follows the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq5ec... which was recorded in July 2014, so demonstrates how things have changed in the space of a year.
It still runs at around 5% speed, even on a 4Ghz PC, this was recorded with -aviwrite so the video shows how things would be if it were running at full speed. The emulation still crashes / hangs MAME at the point the video ends.
The main difference is you can see some 3D during the 'how to play' screens, there is something going on later too but it gets blocked out by a big white rectangle.
Older clip status from mid 2014.

[MAME] svn rv 31237 Chihiro WIP (OutRun 2) This is an -aviwrite recording of OutRun2 in MAME with latest update.
The actual emulation runs at *2*% speed, so actually recording this video took a long time, I recorded it so people can see the new progress without having to sit through almost an hour of flashing screens.
The current emulation can't be coined up, has no 3D, no sound, and hardlocks after displaying the 8th placed high score table (I quit the recording a little before then)
Chihiro is arcade hardware based on the original XBOX. --

Here's the MAME benchmark site... http://www.mameui.info/Bench.htm
I've attached my latest version of the bench batch file.
It has instructions at the beginning on exactly how to set up the games that require it.
I haven't done any benchmarking in a while, but I'm pretty sure it will work with the latest version of MAME as long as you have all the required ROMs.
