Treasures of the Haunted House (movie short, 1983)
#346388 - 10/29/15 12:46 AM

Recently released after sitting in a basement for the last three decades. Horror genre, person lives arcade game.

Game looks like a mockup from a computer of the time. Can anyone identify which one it is or could be? I don't think it's Apple ][ or Atari 400/800, but I could be wrong.

Not sure on the computer. Maybe a ZX Spectrum / Timex 1000? It's not Apple or Atari or pretty much anything obvious from what I can tell.

THIS GAME IS THE REAL POLYBIUS!!! The title was changed before it's release date, but right before it was set to be released, it got cancelled. So this whole time people have been looking for Polybius, instead of trying to look for Treasures of the Haunted House.

Looks almost VIC-20ish, but that doesn't quite seem right.

There is the possibility that it's a machine using a custom character set, but I kinda doubt it.

You know, looking at some TI 99/4A screenshots, that could be it.

Yeah. Or MSX, which had the same video chip.

I'm dying to know as well ... and have asked Tyler here:

I will report back here if Tyler can shed any light on things.

Hey Moose!

Thanks for watching. These are great questions and ones I'd be asking my Dad today if he were still alive. Unfortunately, the only person involved in the production that I'm still in contact with is actor Max Alexander, and he doesn't remember anything about the technical behind the scenes.

Not sure what computer the "game" was made on, but if I had to guess, I think it was a Commedore 64.

The game wasn't a playable game at all, but was instead a series of programmed screens. I doubt the source code exists today. As a kid I wanted to play the game SO bad LOL

I'm sorry I don't know more! Thanjs for taking an interest.

Well, it may not tell us the computer used, but at least Tyler's reply confirms it wasn't a playable game. Thanks Moose.

VIC-20. I spent a few thousand hours on one.
