amd processors
#346159 - 10/21/15 09:01 AM

I have several AMD based machines ranging from 2 core to 6300 FX 6 core chips. Whenever using mameui64 or any of it's variants with the stock mame -cc settings + HLSL turned on I only get 33% on framerates. I'll use the same stock settings on any of my Intel boxes even with built in video (I5-4590 3.30ghz) and HLSL will work perfect, 100% framerate. I have tried nvidia, ati cards Win 7, Win 8.1 , win10 on my AMD boxes and I can not get HLSL to run properly. Can anyone explain why AMD doesn't work yet Intel does?

thanx

Do the games run full speed without HLSL on the AMD chips? It could be AMD's weaker CPU, or it could be those AMD chips have a weaker GPU, or both.

Without HLSL everything works great. One would think a 6300 fx 6 core processor would be enough power just to run galaga in HLSL mode. I'm wondering of other people have the same problem.

HLSL performance depends hard on the hlsl_prescale factor. Try it with 0 (automatic) or a really low value like 3-4. Also check that multithreading is NOT enabled. HLSL also depends only on GPU power. If you use built-in GPU it should at least have equal power to Intel HD 2000-2500.

I figured out why my Intel's work. They all have on board hd4600s which has pixel shader 4.0 (I think) My AMD's have Radeon 3000's and various lower end cards which has 2.0. That would explain the low framerates. Just bought a GT 730 Nvidia card and all works as it should. I always thought that MAME was processor dependent it didn't matter what video card was in the system. Ever since I learned about HLSL it's a slightly different game. Playing Galaga in HLSL on my 50 inch makes a big difference.

Yeah, using HLSL (after a certain update to it's code, can't remember when) started to use huge amounts of GPU bandwidth with internal pre-scaling of the games internal resolution.

After the updated HLSL code, my old Radeon 4850 didn't have the bandwidth for anything past x6 pre scale.

I had to do something I never thought I would have to, upgrade my GPU for MAME usage because of bandwidth limitation (rather than in built feature set support).
