90's? The term is still widely used. But I don't think it's considered derogatory here. Japanese people aren't as outwardly hateful as other countries. Terms like new half and okama are adjectives, and nothing more.

If you read the article referenced, they intentionally stack it to exclude games where you can customise skin colour (The Sims, Second Life, etc.), fighting games (SF, KoF, DoA, etc.) and licensed titles that use characters that already existed in another medium (all X-men games). It's a case of moving the goalposts to get the desired result. Seriously you shouldn't give these people the time of day.
