Games not 4:3
#345090 - 09/14/15 08:13 AM

Hi. I'm resizing snapshots and I need to know what games in MAME don't run on 4:3 screens, such as for instance, modern games in 16:9 displays (in case there are any) or games such as Darius which distribute its display along several monitors).

Apart from this, do you know where can I find pixel-perfect snapshots of games that run in dual monitors. The collection I've downloaded have them in dual-monitor setup and I need them in single-monitor.

Hi

You could use the screen.ini folder file from Mash's mameinfo files. That lists all the games by resolution. A bit of maths and you'll have the screen ratio. It also lists multi screen games.

Incorrect! The resolution of the emulated game is not related to the aspect ratio. Many PlayStation 1 home games ran at 512x240 or 640x240 to maximize the look of the polygons, but they were still absolutely intended for a 4:3 display.

That's right. It's incredible that some people think that CPS* games are widescreen simply because the raw snapshots look like this:

Well there's enough people around now who've known nothing but widescreen ratio since childhood.

4:3 is something only their parents grew up with.

Sure, but that's irrelevant to knowing the difference between game resolution and display aspect ratio. You could make a game in 640x480 that's 16:9 and has round circles etc. when shown on a 16:9 monitor; it'd have weird wide pixels, but that's no different from the weird tall pixels of a 4:3 640x240 PSX game.

Grand Theft Auto III had an option to do just that even back in 2001 (or 2002, at least with the PC version). Can't remember if the PS2 or Xbox versions supported widescreen TVs or not.

Another oddity with GTA3 was with any resolution with a width of 1280. That was hard coded to 5:4 regardless of the aspect ratio of the screen; using square pixel resolutions of 1280x960 or 1280x720 would make the game look like crap (and of course, using 1280x1024 on a 4:3 CRT monitor would also look like crap and would get you labeled as a douche for doing so).

Oh, yeah! There were some PS2 games (don't remember if GTA was one of them) that had a 16:9 option too (and of course remained 640x480 as most PS2 games are). I can't believe I forgot that.

ICO and/or Shadow of the Colossus had that.
