The Pacman Trainer!
#344474 - 08/28/15 03:53 AM

Hello all. I've not been active lately, having had other things going on. Actually they're still going on, but I set my mind on doing something today, and it's turned into an all day event.

Still, I'm ready to unleash it now!

Ever wanted to be really good at Pacman? Ever read something that gave you all the patterns, but couldn't remember them while playing? Yeah, me too!

So here we have a low-tech trainer for everyone.

The idea is very simple. I have taken the text and graphics from a page on this very web site and made it into a series of bezels. You'll either think this is nice idea, or you'll decide I'm mad as a hatter, either way is good.

To use this you have to be able to do the following:

Be willing to change through the Bezels during gameplay, as appropriate.

Pause the game (many of the patterns don't fit on a single screen, so you have to pause to change Bezel and move on the next guide).

Practise. Even with this guide it'll take you a good amount of time to master Pacman, but everything you need to know IS here.

The source for all this goodness is:

http://www.mameworld.info/net/pacman/patterns.html

Here are a couple screenshots to give you an idea of what it looks like:

Example Intro
Here is the Zip:

Puckman

NOTE: Before you use this MAKE A COPY OF YOUR CURRENT ZIP FILE. This file DOES NOT contain other bezels (there are already 16 in here!).

To make a backup - navigate to your [Mame folder]\Artwork folder and rename puckman.zip to puckmanX.zip. Then copy this new zip into the same folder.

To switch between the two you just reverse this - navigate to your [Mame folder]\artwork folder, rename the current puckman.zip to puckmanZ.zip, and rename PuckmanX.zip to Puckman.zip.

Hope that makes sense.

And I hope there is at least one other person who finds this fun and useful.

Don't forget - if it ain't fun, do something else!

Come to think of it, making this Zip wasn't all fun....... Hmmmmmm.....

Interesting idea. I haven't looked at the drivers closely, but if there are any games that relay values based on what level you're on, it would be possible to have it display automatically. For pattern games, this would be nice. Some games don't even require it, e.g. once you figure out how to crouch punch on Karate Champ that's all you need to know. I can see this being useful.

Thanks for the feedback, Nightvoice.

I don't have any knowledge on "looking at the drivers". I'm not entirely technically ignorant, but I really have no idea of how to even start. You are, of course, correct, if it changed automatically it would be even better.

I have tried to contact Killerclown. I didn't want to edit down his text, but perhaps it's a bit wordy.

Still, as a crude method of building in a "solution" to a game, it does work after a fashion. I'm always trying to think of ways of doing something new and different, and this is certainly something I'd of loved to have. I have tried to memorize these patterns forever, but in the heat of the battle always become overwhelmed.
