Resolution and refresh rate

When using a TFT, hwstretch, d3d and fullscreen, does MAME need you to specify your monitor's resolution in mame.ini like this:
# # OSD PER-WINDOW VIDEO OPTIONS # screen auto aspect auto resolution 1920x1080 view auto screen0 auto aspect0 auto resolution0 auto
... or can you leave it in "auto" and expect MAME to detect it? Will it then always use the monitor's native res or will it change it depending on the game?
Another question: can you specify a refresh rate to use, which can differ from your desktop's refresh rate? How?

'auto' has always automatically scaled to your desktop.
It started with 'stretch using hardware' via direct draw, early on MAME development. Then was automatic in D3D, though a software effect or sometimes a prescale value would mess up the scaling. Since the change to D3D as main display mode/deprecation of DD, it's been full-screen.

Just leave it on auto. MAME auto-detects Windows current screen resolution and use it (resolution and refresh rate).
to se a different refresh rate you have two options:
1. set a manual resolution + manual refresh rate (1920x1080 resolution + 60 Hz refresh rate)
Code:
resolution 1920x1080@60
2. let MAME use current Windows's desktop resolution and set a manual refresh rate ("auto" resolution + 60 Hz refresh rate)
Code:
resolution 0x0@60
You can find this info in MAME's documentation file mamedir\docs\windows.txt
