Charging money for MAME
#343055 - 07/28/15 04:20 PM

This place opened near me.

http://www.thegameisafootarcade.com/

They charge admission to play their MAME cabinets and Virtual Pinball. Is there a damn thing that anyone can do? No legality issues? This sickens me. I take solace in knowing they will fail in the first year, at least.

Small world. I have relatives near there. I might stop in and sneer at this place next time I'm in the area.

As you know neither MAMEdev nor VP can afford lawyers, but people might be able to interest the actual game makers (especially Nintendo/Sega/Sony).

A part-time employee there is/was a Facebook contact of mine and knows the owners, I can drop them a line I guess?

They can probably argue that they are not charging per game but only selling all day passes which lets the buyer simply access the facility.

It seems doubtful that anything can or will be done to stop them from operating.

That's a lot of MAME cabs and virtual pin tables..... new [Re: yaggy]

A lot of money to have at least six of each. If they did it non-profit, or if their income just covered costs of everything, would it still be illegal?...even if so, would it be objectionable?

At the very least, someone with a mame.net email address might shoot them an email and tell them to take down all references to MAME from their site.

Be so funny if that Nintendo, Sega and other people show up at their door with their lawyers and judges.

That cannot possibly make it legal to run 5,000 copyrighted games that they have no license for.

I doubt they have any and that would just have the opposite effect because if people did see mame on there and then found out they could get the games themselves on the web they would be less likely to go spend money there.

I'm almost curious if the owner is so fucking stupid that he thinks his business is legal, if not kudos on the testicle size I guess.

Any negative comments I'm sure get hosed off the site.

Ahhh, that's one hornest nest you don't want to poke a stick in. If they get their interest peaked and attack this arcade, they might also try and attack MAME more directly.

Yeah, yeah, before anyone spouts off that emulation is legal. Sure it is. But the last thing anyone needs or wants is a bunch of rabid lawyers breathing down their necks.

Best bet is to approach the arcade owners / operators directly .... (as already stated).

This isn't someone throwing a birthday party. The only way anyone would shut down their new business over an email like that is if they didn't know what they were doing was illegal and they had a conscious about it. So .00001% chance.

Yeah, it's still illegal, because you're ultimately charging people money to play what are effectively pirated games. "Objectionable" depends on your reaction to charging people for a pre-setup version of something they could get for free; it's a long-standing business model for e.g. Red Hat.

Obviously yes. Anyway I changed my mind, someone should just spread human shit all over the building while it's closed.
