You pretty much have to go digging around in the driver source code. Driver for Speed Freak is cinemat.c I don't want to discourage you, but I can tell you from experience that 4-way shifters are a pain in the arse. Speed Freak seems to have something extra weird going on with the start button and gear 4 using the same port bit.

That was helpful. I was at least able to get it to flash what gear I pressed, but in the driver it's set up in such a way that each gear is its own on/off button as opposed to a 4-position control. Can't say there's much use for a gear shift that won't stay in gear. Looks like this one is dead in the water for now, but now I know where to look for other projects in the future. Cheers!

I had the same problem with Drag Race. The only fix I could come up with was to add the output_set_value statements to the function that sets the gear setting so the persistent gear state would be available to the artwork.
