Golden Tee Fore! 2006 Complete - Audio Stutters

First of all, its so awesome to finally have this game up and running. I love the GTFore Series.
Now I know the community gets these posts all the time, but I figured I'd pick the community's brain since I know we've all been looking forward to the GT Fore series for some time.
I've got an i7 3770 3.4Ghz and I'm getting some audio stutters. Anyone got any good tips to reduce those stuttering or is the audio stuttering something all of us are gonna have to live or do you think the only way to get over it is with something newer like an i7-4790K?
I've reviewed the FAQ as well: http://wiki.mamedev.org/index.php/FAQ:Audio]
I saw a YouTube video posted showing gtfore06 off a couple weeks before v162 was released and his hardware wasn't much better than mine, so I was excited. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r9JNWrs8oM]
So any advice?

Video recordings through MAME are always going to run full speed regardless of the emulation speed. The fact that it shows full speed on the video does not mean it played full speed all the time while recording.
Not much you can do - you might hope there are some speedups done along the way on the driver (not likely) or try to cut any programs running in the background that might take CPU. You'll know if your processor is handling it fully if you hit F10 to check the speed and check for it to be running 100%.

Are the GT Fore games ROM and CHD? If so, what are the sizes of the CHD files?
Thanks, Jason

Any changes with 0.163 in terms of performance with the audio stuttering? May just come down to needing faster hardware, but there has been buzz about speed up enhancements.
Thanks, Jason

I can confirm this playing Golden tee Fore complete. I use to get close to 99% with my crappy setup now it barely reached 35-45%.
The earlier GTfore games always ran slow.

I would advise trying it with the latest code that's in the git repo. Due to the architecture of the code, it's a crapshoot whether it will be using the non-accelerated color blending code or the CPU-accelerated color blending code. Give it a try and let me know. Also, yeah, double-check the resolution.

I'll try and do a compile this weekend and see what happens.

My crappy PC specs: i-3 2120 @3.30 64 bit win7. 6 GB memory AMD Radeon HD 6670.
I just compiled to the newest and still a slow performance compared to 162. I was running close to 99% low res setting now barely 45-55%. This was playing all 18 holes.

This is such a hard game to analyze for performance. The version I compiled last night seems about the same as 0.162. I've been using the back 9 of Balmoral Greens as my test. Holes 10 and 11 in particular seem to struggle, some times more than other times. I switched back to 0.163 a few times and that always struggled the most.

I just checked some new code that should help the performance. There is still work being done on optimizing the current 3dfx voodoo code so hopefully it will get better.

I did a compile yesterday and it seems even better. I'm assuming the updates Ted did a few days back are the reason.

The resolution dip switch is the only adjustment I found to provide any major performance boost.

The performance running in medium resolution was totally acceptable on Mame 167 and versions prior leading up to gtfore06's release into Mame.
The performance on Mame 168 seems to have seriously digressed. Low-Alt resolution restores functionality, but obviously not the good looks.

I have a lowly Raspberry Pi 3b+ that I'm looking to upgrade to an I-5 to play GT Fore/06. Do we have a better/new handle on just what I need, precisely, to play it decently?
I am hoping the game has "improved" in the last year or two so I could get a 3rd/4th gen i5 to run it solidly?
thanks in advance!

I battled for years with the problem of audio stutter/echo in Golden Tee Fore Complete on Mame and have recently found the solution on returning to have another crack at it. I was only running Mame on an Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 CPU a few years ago when I last worked on it. The stutter/echo was worst in medium resolution but still there in low resolution. I had tried all the software and settings suggestions I could find on the web, all to no avail. Adding RAM or even SSD drives made little or no difference.
However, on running it with an Intel i7-4790 4 core 8 thread CPU the problem was solved, to my delight. I have also tried similar aged i5 CPUs with only 4 threads and the stutter is still there, although not much. So I can confidently say it all comes down to CPU grunt.
I have 2 original Golden Tee Complete cabs with 29" Nanao CRTs (switchable 15/24 khz) in them which I am running Mame through with ArcadeVGA 5000 cards at 15khz. They now run fantastically well with the i7-4790 PCs, which can be bought quite cheaply these days (compared to 5+ years ago) so I am very glad that I didn't give up on them and get rid of those cabs with their beautiful CRTs!
I am running Arcade64 (Version 0.265, built 25 April 2024) in Windows 10 with Mame Version 0.265
Cheers
