This guy here. This guy right fucking here. He says what I've been saying for the better part of a decade and a half about all these shitty smoothing algorithms. You're trying to smooth something that was never intended to be smoothed in the first place.

Agreed. The shader/post-processing algorithms that I find myself liking the most always have been either basic interpolation or, if available, a CRT simulation. Particularly with the Sega Genesis as many developers used field blending to create more colors where there originally was none. Very neat. The SNES used this to a lesser extent, but I know that artifact on Atari 8-bit has been really maximized by more recent developers (see Project M, the Atari 8-bit Wolf3d 'clone').
I don't feel the work that folks like Blargg have put into recreating CRT monitors gets its due credit. It's truly the best way to play games designed for systems that were made during the CRT era.
Eagle, SuperSAI, XBR, etc... they can all go to hell and have _ALWAYS_ looked like shit. Just like playing CPS1 games in 16:9 AR. Argh does that rub me the wrong way.

"Runny makeup" is perfect. When I once railed about this issue, that simple phrase would have been a great arrow in my quiver. It is indeed upsetting to know that some people think these methods of "enhancing" games that were never meant to be enhanced is somehow cool, though perhaps there is hope given that some of the same people are now experimenting with GLSL/HLSL shaders to recreate the original experience (an ironic twist to be sure).
It's arguably worse that YouTube is now littered with "HD upscaled widescreen" videos of older games - and as these videos settle into the annals of history, asymptotically outnumbering videos of the actual console, we are led even further away from a true historical account of what these systems were actually like when they were around. Terrible and sad - and I'm afraid it's only going to get worse.

An artist works in a medium that at the time calls to them, and then realizes Art by creating something that has its own reality, the details informed by the artist's needs and sensibility.
Some objects/realities are simplistic, even infantile. Art is a matter of degree.
Neutral tools, which most do not and will not have. So bae 't.

Is there anything like Blargg's filter available for MAME? My pc cannot handle HLSL, so I wonder if there is an alternative for NTSC. Naked dithering looks terrible.
