samsho2, initial entry, bug?

After *finishing Samurai Shodown II, at some point it will have the AAA at the top left of the screen, but pressing directions does not change the letters. In fact, just pressing button 'A' on the controller (or, what would be 'A' on the NeoGeo) makes it end instead of entering the first initial 'A'.
I have been able to enter my initials if I get a fast time and then lose 2 rounds later.
* Note: I did use savestates for this particular playthrough, (and did not use any continues). So, I hope that wouldn't cause some instability (e.g. the initial entry issue). Using no continues will give you Staff Credits.
Oh yeah. I'm using MAME .149.

I'll try and give it a run tonight without save states/cheats and using current official MAME to see what happens.
