Q: Σ, Sigma function on an adding machine
#337109 - 02/22/15 10:20 AM

Okay, at work someone dun goofed with the adding machine switches.

In my attempts to feed the horse salt (never mind what that means, or maybe you can figure it out) and wedge these switches to fixed/immovable positions... I come to this switch.

Off | Σ On

I've tried to Google what this switch/function is for, but I can't find anything... Or, what I do find gets into some complicated (to me) hullabaloo with a whole lot of other symbols/functions that have nothing to do with an adding machine.

Eh, so, anyway. WTF is this thing for?

It looks like a sigma...

EDIT: nevermind, I read the body of your post without reading the title.

Let me break this down for you in layman's terms. new [Re: Tomu Breidah]

Flashback horrors! I used to have to use that function!

Gah!

[edit]
Oh, but to relate that to an adding machine... say every thing you add up is the cost of an item plus 5% tax, for example. Under the sum setting, what ever function you set the adding machine to do (add 5% tax to the input amounts), it will provide you said total sum.

So, instead of having to externally add the 5% to each line item, the adding machine will add that to every sum you put into it.

Properly set, you could type into it...
10+
6+
9+
4=
30.45

Although, I can't see myself needing to use such a function in the foreseeable future.
