The original Street Fighter (from 1987)
#336767 - 02/08/15 12:30 AM

Wasn't there a Japanese version of the game with pneumatic buttons?

I remember reading about this too, not necessarily a Japanese version but a version where the harder you hit a button the harder the punch or kick would be.

The original had piezo impact sensors, one for punch and one for kick. For the main game it just translated the input to three levels (light/medium/heavy), but the bonus game was open-ended, giving you a higher score for hitting it harder.

If that ever saw use in the US, I'm betting it was VERY short-lived, the buttons soon being replaced by standards.

It was very short-lived. Not due to impact sensors being damaged, mind you. It was because of idiots injuring themselves trying to drop-knee the impact sensors to get higher scores. I don't think the impact sensor version ever made it out of Japan.

Yes, it was in the U.S. in Boston MA at an arcade called Teddybear Arcade on Stuart Street no longer in business. It was pretty popular and the buttons did get pretty beaten up. I would use my elbow playing that game when my hands got tired.

Maybe some special ROMs are required to emulate it...

Err Vas, you realize that in the versions we have only the world one has impact sensors? And the japanese one doesn't...

GAME( 1987, sfan, sf, sfan, sfan, driver_device, 0, ROT0, "Capcom", "Street Fighter (World, pneumatic buttons)", GAME_SUPPORTS_SAVE )

What makes you think it isn't?

Damn, going on my own experience of arcades rather than looking at what's in MAME...

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a japan version with impact sensors we don't have a dump for, but at least we know there's a fair chance it went to Europe...

I've played one in France 25 years ago ...

Perhaps they weren't all that rare ....

I'm pretty sure I have seen and played one somewhere. Didn't like the feel of the big pads, iirc .... Got a feeling it was in the Myer center arcade in Brisbane, Australia.

A friend on mine has just said there was one in his tiny little local arcade in a remote seaside town, about half way up the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Perhaps after people started hurting themselves in Japan and they got pulled from arcades there they exported all the original cabinets rather than disposing of them.

Wouldn't be surprising. I think I played one in France, but I'm not really sure. It could have been the 3-button version, but I don't think so...
