Guided Missile revisited
#335147 - 12/14/14 11:44 PM Attachment: gmissile.jpg 362 KB (5 downloads)

I was playing Guided Missile a little while ago and realized I never really finished working on it. Changes are as follows:

  • Finished cleaning the bezel.
  • Redid the "night" bezel with more accurate simulation of backlighting.
  • Added a gradient bulb glow around the explosions (as a separate element).
  • Adjusted the layer ordering and transparency to make the explosions look more accurate.
  • Minor cleaning on the backdrop.

I also created sound samples from blinddog's video. The quality is not great but it works.

Can't wait to try this! You're the man! Could you please do me a favor and post your Atari Basketball bezel to an external site for download?

very nice work. Guided Missile is a game that is enhanced a lot by the artwork.

Like others have mentioned earlier...great work there.

>Redid the "night" bezel with more accurate simulation of backlighting.

The illuminated backlit lamps support is excellent. The artwork section should eventually have different download files available for those that want either artwork style (backlit lamp being visible or no backlit lamp support)

Some of the various Midway glossy parts catalogs of 1970s/1980s era Midway games show an internal illustrated cab view showing where the backlit lamps are mounted within the cab. It isn't as accurate compared to getting a quality photo/video to work with as reference material, but the cab illustrations within the Midway catalogs do indicate where interior backlit lamps are mounted behind the front plexiglass bezel.

Midway Clowns, Midway Gunfight would look good with backlit lamp support as well....especially Midway Clowns imo. I liked the cab design look of Midway Clowns, but Clowns gameplay was nowhere near as good as Exidy's Circus.

>I also created sound samples from blinddog's video. The quality is not great but it works.

There should be Guided Missile logic schematics online by this time, I also purchased one in the past, in which someone that is knowledgeable with analog electronics could eventually emulate the audio sounds. It is a bummer that currently no Derrick Renaud type talent around that can decipher the schematics and write code into MAME to emulate the sound effects.

I wouldn't be surprised that Guided Missile might require some type of circuit hardware component to be emulated first before any work can begin with Guided Missile audio sounds.

Guided Missile uses five bulbs in a straight line with no attempt to align them with the artwork on the glass. I suspect other Midway games are similar.

I've always thought of Gunfight as an unfinished version of Boothill and never bothered with it. Maybe I'll take another look. Boothill might also benefit from backlighting.

Some of the Midway cabs do vary depending how the upright cabs were constructed. With Clowns, Gunfight, Bowling, having monitor mounted facing players directly so they wouldn't use the fluorescent/nightlight tubes while the Midway cabs that have monitor at bottom of cab and reverse mirror reflecting the images onto the backdrop/playfield artwork piece do use the tubes.

If there aren't any useful reference photos online, then the Midway gloss parts catalogs would be second choice of seeing how backlit lamps are placed.

Gunfight was somewhat popular iirc....but nothing like the long lines for games like Dragon's Lair or Star Wars cabs.

Gunfight either has one or two backlit lamps and it also has an insert piece that players read to see how many lives remain or the score total. And the monitor had a yellow acetate overlay piece which that part is already supported in MAME.

(BTW, thanks to EnvisagedOne for posting a link but unfortunately that was an older version of the artwork)

I can take a look at that later... in the meantime, a bit shinier version is coming next MAME Artwork release. (Bonus... the "Keep Playing After" score will update automatically, based on dipswitch settings).

Hey no worries. You need to engage player two to hear audio from the left channel.

Surely one of the first "stereo" games. It had a separate speaker for each player.

After looking over Midway flyers, the earliest two separate channel/stereo Midway brand video game is Midway Wheels II since it supports two players to play each other simultaneously. No earlier Midway (non-cpu hardware) brand video games support stereo channel.

I was thinking the same thing. Gun Fight is definitely stereo, and I'd expect there were even older stereo games.

To be fair, Guided Missile has much more sophisticated sound hardware than Gun Fight, including a couple of sound-effect panner circuits.

> set game for two player game to get stereo effect

Actually, Gun Fight is always two-player; there's no CPU opponent. That was added in Boot Hill.

The video with the audio samples taken from is is awesome. The game sounds amazing In the video. I wish someone would do this for all the games that need proper sound emulation like the Universal and Zaccaria games. More would be better even though it's not all there.

Midway Wheels II looks to be the first Midway brand stereo channel output video game.

iirc Derrick Renaud also mentioned a similar audio hardware description for Dog Patch.

I forgot about that part regarding Gun Fight.
