Snap directory problem....

In my 'old' directory, MAME.exe (in this case .154) will not heed mame.ini snap entry of 'snaps' - whether the ini is in the parent directory or in the ini folder.
Creating a new directory with stock folders and all, and new mame.ini, with the snapshots entry set to 'snaps', will create a snaps folder and save there. What could be the issue in my old directory?
Note:
- XP machine - typically I use UIFX, and it will save to the snaps folder in my old directory (if both the ini and the gui>directories ini are set similarly).

No idea. Maybe there's a permissions issue, or the folder is write protected because you copied it off of a backup DVD or CD.
Temporarily move your snaps folder out of there. Create a new, empty snaps folder. Run MAME, take a snapshot. Did it save to the new snaps folder? Good. Now move all your old snaps into the new folder.
