I'm waiting for verification on hardware; the emulator he used isn't the most accurate.

TASes are done through emulators -of course. For verification to be made on actual hardware... Wouldn't that require wiring something up to the board, such as an Arduino preprogrammed with control inputs?
eta: I suppose the hardest part of doing something like that would be getting the timing down perfect / in sync.

Why don't you just take the number of frames that were needed and divide them by the number of frames a real NES displays per second? Then you can see if the time is correct.

Hardware isn't perfect like that. Depending on how demanding parts of the game are, it could display different frames per second in different parts. I'm guessing the emulator isn't accurate enough to emulate that.

It's not a TAS, it's a live attempt without tricks, just skill. At least that's what I got from the comments and its listing in the leaderboard.
As for testing in real hardware, yes people does plug interfaces to feed the input files to the real hardware. I saw it not too long ago for hacking a nintendo game (forgot which one) to run arbitrary code on real hardware. The damn thing coded on the fly a pong game. Does anyone remember this thing?

It's interesting, I saw a blurb about this taking about how he exploited all kinds of glitches to get this time. The only glitch I saw being exploited was using the pipe instead of the vine to get to the World 8 warp. The end of 8-1 was a little weird, bouncing off the Bullet Bill onto the flagpole, but I can't see how that saved any time.

Is Mario supposed to be able to run over the little gaps - for example in 8-1 on up? Also, why is Mario continuing to run when stuck at the flag pole on 8-1? And, why is Mario translucent the whole time?

I saw that Mario ran into a flag pole box and still got the flag. I was like that can't be right. I'm glad you saw that too. LOL

Yeah, you can definitely run across the little gaps, as long as you're going full tilt holding B. There are a few sections that would be pretty close to impossible if you couldn't do that.
> Also, why is Mario continuing to run when stuck at the flag pole on 8-1?
I'd never seen that glitch before, but it appears to be because he bounced straight into the pole after hopping on the Bullet Bill. Weird, but it didn't seem to affect the time at all.
