So Tammy Duckworth wants my help. Here it is.
#327540 - 06/28/14 08:21 PM

Mrs Duckworth,

Here is my assistance to you, in the form of advice.

1) Sending someone to my house unsolicited, to specifically ask for me, at 8am on a Saturday...probably not a great idea. Catch me on a morning where I was working until 3am and up at 6am with the kids? Ouch. I'll let that slide though. Aside from t he whole "Being 8am" thing, how could your volunteer have know I would be tired.

2) You seem angry. "Nancy Grace" angry. Vindictive-smoking-gun-style angry. I understand you have passion for doing right, but every time I've seen you grill somebody doing wrong, I almost want to root for them because you come across so ornery.

3) We understand that you have no legs. All of Illinois knows it. Half the country knows it. You might want to ease up on that a bit. There is a subtle-yet-distinct difference between a disadvantage bolstering your voice, and bolstering your voice with a disadvantage. Let me explain. Take that little lady on that dancing with the stars program that had no legs, for example. I never heard her say "Look what I can do with no legs!". Instead, I saw her dance beautifully, and then noticed, on my own, "Holy crap, she has no legs!" I was able to recognize her effort for what it was first. Seeing her excel on what was originally perceived as a level playing field made her appear stronger. Conversely, announcing to the world "Listen to me because I got my legs blown off for you!" just makes you look like a martyr, and automatically lowers the the bar by which you are judged. It also, albeit unfairly, lowers the expectations. Yet you use it in every other press release I've seen.

umm... don't you have to DIE to become a martyr?

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!

Quote:

mar·tyr (märtr)
n.
1. One who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles.
2. One who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle.
3.
a. One who endures great suffering: a martyr to arthritis.
b. One who makes a great show of suffering in order to arouse sympathy.

I guess the 3.b definition is the one what makes more sense in this situation.

There are other ways to help people like that...

I said she looked like one, not that she was. If there is a better way to put the sentiment I'm all ears.

It doesn't read well, because of the repetition - but more than that, it's violent. At least angry sounding. Neither message would I want.

I thought of perpetrators may get sexed, but violators seemed better.

Anyways, I've gotten lots of compliments on it. A guy came here to buy a guitar, brought his wife, they both thought it was great.
