NVRAM pack download to bypass long waits at startup
#326012 - 05/19/14 02:53 AM

Does anyone have or know of a place that has a NVRAM pack download that contains the NVRAM files for games that have long initialization wait times during the first time playing the game?

For example: The game Red Earth has a very long initialization wait time when you try playing the game for the first time. It writes about 44 MB to the NVRAM. There are several games that are similar in wait time, such as the other CP-S III games. So I thought maybe these files can be hosted on a MAME add-on website... like a Progetto-SNAPS type of website or something like that.

What do you think?

Probably better to just use the Fast Forward button.

I do, but even when throttling/fast forwarding through the initialization process... it still takes a few minutes. I just figure that since there are add-on files available for almost everything one can think of for MAME, why not these NVRAM convenient files as well.

In this particular case, the reason why it takes so long the first time you run a CD-based game on CPS3 it is flashes to NVRAM the actual rom contents. Sharing the NVRAM files, in essence, would be the same offering ROMS for download. In either case, that won't happen here. This is precisely how the arcade games operated when you first turned them on from factory. You only need to do it once and then replays of that title should be fine.

Not always the case, Ikaruga needs doing every time you run it... ..bloody annoying.

Ikaruga startup speed has nothing to do with nvram. Ikaruga is also not cps3.

of course, you could just hit f10 and reduce the wait to the (about) 5 seconds it takes. And this is only on an i5 750.

What about NVRAM pack for games with hidden features already unlocked such as Smoke in Mortal Kombat 3?

This is Big Karnak we're talking about here. He's emulating on hardware almost as old as the MAME project itself

I thought Red Earth was older than MAME, since Red Earth was 1996, and MAME was 1997. Back in 1997, I didn't use MAME, I used a different emulator.

What I'm wondering is why it's so difficult to deal with the loading one time, then you save the nvram files you've created, make them read only, and use them to keep the loading times to a minimum later on. Frankly, I kind of like the long loading times. Makes my imagination believe I was a spoiled rich kid back then whose mommy and daddy bought me expensive arcade games that I played once or twice, then never touched again. Heh.
