RADEON vedio card shoppers can thank me later
#325955 - 05/16/14 06:31 AM

Got a code for 3 free games because of the video card I ordered. It'll be like 3 weeks before I get everything (if I'm lucky)but I decided to use the code anyway. Considering I got just about every other Tomb Raider game from GoG, I figured I might as well get the latest one while it's still part of the offer...

Since I've done this, chances are good the the games on the list will be updated to newer/better ones within the next few days (or on the day I get my new system built, just for a kick in the nuts).

Get it, it's great. I don't play games anymore like I used to but I really enjoyed the new Tomb Raider.
Tip: You don't have to go crazy trying to hunt down every single item on every level as you play through the story, all the maps remain accessible throughout, you can go back to earlier areas at any time, even after you finish the game.

What are the two other ones?

Don't get the Tomb Raider from that promo. That, Sleeping Dogs, and Deus Ex Human Revolution are the base versions without any DLC, and they sell for $5 pretty often. They haven't updated those games in the promo in a while and I doubt they ever will.

And you're lucky. TigerDirect didn't send me my promo codes, they told me to contact my video card manufacturer for them. I did... and they yelled at Tiger for not sending me my codes. Tiger seems reluctant to do so, to say the least.

Fool me once, shame on you (I bought a sound card like ten years ago there, the game port was broken, and they refused to replace it.) Fool me twice... shame on me.

The video card (and code) came from Newegg.

Ordered a bigger SSD from TigerDirect

Ordered the case from Amazon (and got free shipping vice a cheaper base price but OUTRAGEOUS shipping fee through Newegg for the case).

Guess I got my wires crossed on the original post, ordering from 3 places and all...

I have over the years *tried* to buy form tiger. 'out of stock' every time.

I figured they were some sort of advertising scheme at this point. I hear of others actually buying stuff from them but never have actually been able to pull it off.

This is going back to when they had 6 page spreads in comp shopper...

Last time I tried to buy from them, they were sending catalogs of their own out. They never did ship (or charge me for) the $800 RAM I ordered. Yeah, that was a long time ago. I think it was a 128MB module, or maybe a pair of smaller ones. But before that, I did get a system from them with... what was it, one of the non-intel chips, a 386 w/math. Heh, it's probably in a closet somewhere, since even then computer recycling was a hassle.

Maybe VRAM fault? I had a 580 that had horizontal lines which was VRAM. And is it just the squares you had or any crashes?

These 700-series Maxwell architecture GTX's are supposed to be real winners, especially as far as power efficiency and performance goes (cool & quiet is a must for me), so I decided to scoop up a 750 Ti and we'll see how it goes (I've been in the mood to do so some FPS gaming)

Using the HDMI off of mine. Look a little bit sharper on the texts.

Yeah I decided to upgrade my monitor as well to a newest-gen flicker-free Benq 27 incher, which does include HDMI support plus the actual cable itself as a nice bonus

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ITORMDC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Because at 1080p, digital signaling is definitely required for optimal display quality. Analog just won't cut it at that resolution.

My native monitor resolution is 1920x1200... vice the 1920x1080. Would that still benefit from HDMI over using DVI? All my video cards since just after I got this monitor (maybe 6 or 7 years ago?) have had HDMI but I never bothered with it. I detest monitors with built-in speakers so I thought DVI was enough (Assuming HDMI was either needed or at least less of a hassle to get audio to built-in speakers).

DVI is a strange beast. It supports three modes:

  • Analog
  • Single link digital
  • Dual link digital

Devices and cables can be made that support any of these combinations of modes:

  • Analog only
  • Single link digital only
  • Analog and single link digital
  • Single and dual link digital
  • Analog, and single and dual link digital

A device or cable that doesn't support one or more modes may have pins/holes missing to hint at what it supports, and possible prevent insertion of incorrect cables (this is usually only used to prevent analog cables being plugged into devices that support digital only). However, sometimes a cable has all the pins, but not all of them are wired, so you have to be careful. A cable with all the pins required for dual link digital may only be wired for single link digital. Dual link digital cables are usually far thicker, stiffer and pricier.

Analog mode is VGA-compatible. Single link digital mode supports up to 1600x1200 at 60Hz. It can support up to 1920x1200 at 60HZ with CVT-RB blanking. Dual link digital mode can pump twice the data rate of single link mode, so it can still only get about 3840x2400 at 30Hz, but it does pretty well at lower resolutions.

So if your video card and monitor are reasonably new (say less than five years old) and you aren't using a DVI cable that only supports analog, you'll be using single link digital mode at your monitor's native resolution and it'll all be good. If your gear is older, you may need dual link cables and all for digital to work.

And if you want to go for really high resolutions and don't want to be stuck at 30Hz, you really should be thinking about DisplayPort 1.2 (common enough in high-end video cards now) or HDMI 1.4 (doesn't seem to exist in real life yet).

looks like my monitor has a dual link connector (not sure if it actually uses dual link though...) but none of my cables are dual link. I had no idea I was missing anything this whole time.

It's embarrassing enough that I always assumed dual link used 2 physical cables (dual monitor setups on my work computers use a splitter type cable (2 DVI-D on outgoing end, and dual link connector on the incoming end).

Very good point, there's no guarantee that just because it uses a dual-link-capable DVI connector that it will actually use it.

That's a different beast again: it's a two analog/single link digital DVI connections in a single non-standard proprietary connector. Unplug one some time and look at that pin arrangement - it's different to DVI.

Dual link DVI is only ever used for driving a single monitor at higher resolution/refresh rate - it's never used for driving two monitors.
