Anyone ever used these USB to VGA adapters?
#324693 - 04/15/14 05:47 AM

Need a 3rd monitor to run no more than ~1024x768. I can either spend $60 on a used triple monitor support card, and another $30 on an active display port adapter...or roll the dice on this...

I have no prior knowledge or experience, but if I were a betting man, I'd put money on it being a piece of shit.

Well piece of shit is relative. While you definitely wouldn't want to game on it, I could see it performing adequately for productivity applications. I mean, early two-page DTP displays ran 1280x1024 over SCSI2 so you could use them with a Mac Plus - USB3 has more bandwidth than that, and operating systems have come a long way. That said, I've never used one, and would be very interested to hear experiences from someone who actually has.

You would be better buying Startech. USB 2.0 is good enough for reading PDFs, but not fast enough for DVDs. You can play Mame with it....

USB 3.0 is marginally better. Can you not drop in a PCI graphics card like a 8400gs?

Do they make that in a non-express package?

If it's express, I'm under the impression it would only do 2/3 outputs simultaneously, as the VGA/DVI share a RAMDAC. That's the boat I'm in with this 5450 now...

No that's not what he meant - keep your current card and add the 8400gs.

Anything that's not too power hungry and isn't terribly old should be fine if it's only for work at 1024x768.

I have the 5750 which has the display port for the third monitor. I run four monitors in total. If you have a DP port you can get a Startech passive VGA adapter for $25 which allows for much higher resolutions than 1024x768.

If you utilize eyeinfinity you can get video surround for your games. The card is not expensive and runs under 40w.

I use the USB VGA for the fourth monitor, but if it is for gaming, I would look at the display port option.

Yeah, that was one of the scenario-questions I posed. The current card in this application takes up the only PCIe slot. Unless there is a PCI-non-e version of the 8400gs, no-go on that.

Don't feel bad, I was making the same bet until the moment the driver finished installing. I know that USB3 could handle at least 800x600 bandwidth smoothly, never thought USB2 would do it.
